According to the Haines Economic Development Plan: Economic Baseline Report, tourism is “Haines’ largest industry” with non-Alaskan residents spending $10.4 million in Haines during the summer of 2016 (see p.25). While many of these visitors come from cruise ships (73% in 2016), many others arrive for local events such as the SE Alaska State Fair, Beer Fest, Kluane Bike Relay, and Bald Eagle Festival (see p.25-28).
Many choose to visit Haines for its stunning natural beauty and intact ecology. As “the Adventure Capital of Alaska” - according to Haines’ official tourism website visithaines.com - the local tourism industry capitalizes upon our healthy environment. For example, companies like Chilkat Guides, Rainbow Glacier Adventures, Alaska Mountain Guides, Sockeye Cycle, and so many others rely upon healthy waterways and/or wildlife such as bears, eagles, and salmon to deliver the tours they advertise. Additionally, many people choose to visit Haines to fish, hike, and explore on their own. All of these visitors contribute commerce to the town which expands job opportunities and increases local sales tax revenues.
In Klukwan, tourism also plays an important role. The Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center attracts tourists from the cruise ships as well as other independent visitors. These visits employee community members and youth, while also providing important revenue that enables the center to offer classes and opportunities to community members.
